Engagement Dress: Vogue 1314

For a break in the wedding dress series, I present my engagement dress! Actually, it was just a dress I made and realized it was the best garment I had to wearing during my engagement photos. Our wedding photographer is Sebastien Bicard, based in Northern California but travels a TON so ring him if you need some really great pictures. He was amazing to work with, Pete and I aren't very good at getting our picture taken, but Sebastien made everything feel really natural. I totally recommend him! But I have him for May 27th!

For this dress I used Vogue 1314, a Rebecca Taylor design. Its a good old-fashioned knit sheath, but with lots and lots of ruching down the sides. I actually wish there was at least 50% more fabric to ruche up, as it is, I think its a little spare. I used merino wool knit (another step in my apparent goal to have an entire wardrobe of merino) from Stone Mountain and Daughter in Berkeley. There is no lycra in this fabric so I'm waiting to see how it will wear. I already notice the hem getting a little stretched out at the end of the day so I'm a bit worried. The entire dress is also lined in the same fabric so its quite cozy.

As the dress and the lining are only sewn together at the neckline and armscyes, I find sometimes the lining rides up and bunches which is pretty annoying. Also, for a knit dress, the lining has a bust dart which is pretty weird. Might want to change that next time.

You can't see my dress in this picture, its just my favorite one.

New Patterns: Vogue Spring 2015

I'm traveling for work and have long, lonely nights to myself. Judgements!

This batch of patterns is kinda dishwater dull, but there are two that I really like.

Vogue 1440
This yoke gives me life! I'm making this with a white front/yoke and a black back to really emphasize that point. I could leave the rest of the pieces though.

Vogue 1437
Love this whole outfit...almost. That top is fantastic, I adore loosely draped tops and with a wrap too, sign me up! This skirt is fantastic, color block, slit, weird-ass ties. Wait, weird-ass ties? Fiance thinks they look like the orthodox jewish string-things and I think they look like they could blind a child standing close if you turn around too fast. I know fringe is a trend this season, but you need more than two 'fringes' to really count as fringe.

So if I buy anything from Vogue, I'll buy these two.

Onto the, 'let's just say these aren't for me.'

Vogue 1435
She's so pretending she's Nicole Kidman right now.

Vogue 1432
Whoa, gotta respect that seaming detail, musta been a bitch of a pattern to draft. Have fun adjusting this for different bust sizes.

Vogue 1434
For all the fanfare Vogue was making about Mizrahi's first pattern in a long time, this is bad. So so so juvenile. Photoshop out the model and put in a child and this is a lovely Easter dress. But for an adult women who is legally allowed to consume alcohol, this is sad. Also after Mizrahi's 'is the moon a planet or a star' moronic drivel, I can't even.

Vogue 9096
For the distinguished karate madame.

Vogue 1431
This looks like a fitted drum major uniform, I should know, I was a drum major. Band nerd forever!

Vogue 9077
I actually really like this one, but only with the contrasting bands, without them its just a shirt-dress. The extension of the constrast into the collar makes this really special. I have a feeling this is a ripoff though, it looks familiar.

Vogue 9091
Incontrovertible proof that Vogue follows Lily Sage & Co. (I love her fearless style)

Vogue 1442
She got her dress caught in her underwear and they forgot to photoshop it out! Heads are going to roll in the Vogue Pattern offices.

Vogue 1438
Back that thing up, gurl.

Vogue 1433
Ok so I have this weird thing where a movie comes out and I could swear up and down that it came out a year or two ago. I can remember the red carpet and the commercials for it, but people just call me crazy. This dress has already come out right? Fabric and all? I'm from the future, shhhh

Vogue 1436
So boring I'm falling asleep.

Goodnight!

New Vogue Patterns: Winter/Holiday 2014

Let's start with the good.

Vogue 1424
I absolutely adore this dress! I love the strappies, those pleats (swoon!), and even the color. With all the seams it seems fairly straightforward how to adjust for a larger bust too! I know the strappies have gotten mixed reviews, but I'm firmly team strappies.

Vogue 1421
Oh man alive I love that seaming! Other than the weird, fun seaming, that's a pretty simple dress. I want to make it in scuba something fierce!

Okay, the others:

Vogue 1423
Ok, I'm off team strappies. If you left off that underlayer, this would be a very chic dress for your next BDSM soiree.

Vogue 1426
I want to pull her bodice up for her. That's some super dated stuff guys.

Vogue 1428
Helen Mirren would look hot in this. No joke, Helen Mirren is hot.

Vogue 1425
Anyone else want to cut this off and make a top? Cause I do, bad. Otherwise its a fairly boring shape.

Vogue 1427
She's going out on the town with ruffle-lady. They're on the prowl!

Vogue 1422
Again a pretty, if dull dress. Gorgeous fabric. If Michelle Obama hasn't worn this yet, she ought to.

Vogu 1420
I do love a good wrap bodice, even a mock-wrap is ok. The finishing on this dress looks like it was finger-pressed and stapled. This style needs to be sharp.

Vogue 9046
I don't even know about this one. I love and hate the slight 40's-50's style. Removing the sleeves might bring this towards a more modern aesthetic. The pleats are beautiful, but there are so many it looks like a corset. The v-neck is very elegant.

New Vogue Patterns: Fall 2013

This season Vogue went rather cultured and grand, not my style, I'm still way too immature to pull off that.

Vogue 1361
See, very worldy. Salma Hayek would rock this dress to within an inch of its dressy little life. Also, my, those are some tight sleeves!

Vogue 1365
This is bad. It might just be the fabric choice which is a faux fur, but she has linebacker shoulders, gorilla arms, and a teeny tiny pinhead sticking out the top.

Vogue 1358
And this looks messy, like chunks of fabric were haphazardly taped to her body. If I wore this, I'd rerearranging ruffles all day.

Vogue 1366
I love these pants, but I think they can only be described as below-waist on this long-torsoed model. That top was last worn by Hugh Hefner in 1972.

Vogue 1360
The 'I have to pee, can you speak up?' pose. This dress is fine, nondescript, it would be better if that upside-down 'V' thing were thinner as it shows in the line drawing.

Vogue 1367
The top is gross, but those pants have promise. I've been looking for the perfect traveling on a plane outfit and those look they would be comfortable even if I had to sit next too...oh you don't even want to know what I had to sit next to last flight. Moving on.

Vogue 1362
Bianca is going to cut a bitch and then hide the weapon in her neck pouch.

Vogue 1359
This is Bianca the next day after they've told her they found an unidentifiable woman's body on her 50-acre Hamptons estate. Pure innocence. Also, Biance, the shoulder pleats on your dress make the bodice look very baggy, please don't hurt me.

New Sewing Patterns: Vogue Holiday 2012

While I try to get my actual sewing into displayable condition I will relentlessly mock Vogue's newest offerings to the community.

Vogue 1326
Jester-chic! Maybe if this didn't have the top pink panel and just have a v-neck, it would be better. Someone tried to dress up the color blocking trend and this what happened. Also, I try not to discuss the models, but her hand looks like a claw! I'm going to moisturize now.

Vogue 1327
Pouchy belly alert! Why oh why would you gather right at the belly and only at the belly. The amount of times that sewing patterns employ gathering is ridiculous. Much like 'more cowbell' of the music world, 'more gathering' is the war cry of the Big4.

This is super cute if the bodice went straight down into a skirt or it was just a shirt, but I have one major problem after that. This would be MURDER to iron! Even the line drawing is wrinkled and that's saying something. One of the recommended fabrics is linen, are you kidding me?

Vogue 1328

I dub thee, 'This is my pubic area' dress. Yeah, can't stop looking now, can you? This is a perfect example of a Vogue dress, little chic, rather conservative, with a couple of boring details. LOVE the purple though! And hey, has anyone noticed that last three have been rendered in SOLID fabrics and ok poses?!?! Its like they're listening.

Vogue 1329
Hey, that's cute! Now that's color blocking done right! The line pattern claims there are pleats at the side, but I wouldn't know. Pleats at the side, also employed nearly as much as pouchy belly gathering. Need proof? See previous pattern.

Vogue 1330
Seriously? Its a slip dress with two rectangles stapled to the sides.

Vogue 1331
That's hideous, its looking at me.

Vogue 8846
Really pretty and very chic and for once, a patterned fabric was the absolute perfect choice to present this pattern with. Brava Vogue! I love the simple front, the neckline, and the pleat in the back, totally wearable, but totally special.

Vogue 8847
Ok, this has been done before, but it looks like a nice pattern. I like the detail of the hem (is that like the smallest detail to like or what?). Like the gathered sleeves (yes, gathering can be used for good and not just evil). Neckline's nice, self belt is nice. I think that model was on ANTM a million years ago. If she was was, I'm going to be sad that that info has stuck around in my head this long, there's more important stuff that should be in there.

Vogue 8849
Tail, TAIL, TAIL!!!!

Vogue 8848

Nice side panels, but I have other patterns that I already want to used for paneling. Its fine. Jeez, there were a lot of patterns in this release.

Vogue 8853
I can't...Boob curtains....Body curtains....Spindly little sleeves.......Bow

Vogue 8855
You know that Christmas advent calenders where you open one window each day, counting down until Christmas and you get a little prize for each day? That's what this looks like to me.

Or maybe this is supposed to be tiny billboards. I would need an Exxon or McDonald's logo to transfer into there. The back panel could be a digital print of the open road. Route 66!

Oh the ideas!

Two fly swatters, the back is just tons of bugs....Maybe I should stop while I'm ahead.

Vogue 8854
Running the kids to school before yoga-wear if I've ever seen it.

Vogue 8857
Ruffly chests, the third most employed detail after belly gathers and side pleats.

Vogue 8859
I hate leggings unless you are wearing them under pants in sub-zero temperatures, so this is obviously a no go. But you have to check out the rest of the pictures for this pattern. The model is wearing the same pants in each picture, but they change the shoes each time. Why?

Vogue 8863
I love big coats with elbow-length sleeves that have smaller sleeves sticking out. I hate the rest of this pattern.

Vogue 8845
80's, super 80's. What's on her head? Something's off with the lapel, help me out? Is that a skull? So many questions.

Vogue 8860
I really really like this! The hood, swingy shape, minimalistic details, color blocking. Its fab! Yup, fab.

Vogue 8861
This would really fall apart without a belt. If you have to rely on a belt to make something cute, something is wrong. I like the collar.

Vogue 8862
Ok, this seems to have a lot of detail, but its all black and hard to see. PS, don't match you tights and you bag. Nononononono!

Vogue 8865
Why didn't they finish this? The pieces are falling off!

Vogue 8866
Wow, Vogue always really grasps towards the end, don't they? Hideous, all around. That is a powerful peplum and those are the worst pants ever. Don't match your lipstick, shoes, and bag.

Now for my final two favorite patterns, I'm so excited for these!

Vogue 1332

I love this! I really really do! Does it look like the outer protective shell of a beetle? Why yes it does, a FABULOUS beetle! Love the beetle shape, everyone needs more round coats in their lives. The collar is awesomely huge and shoulder has a intriguing shape. Obviously, I love that it has sleeves that seem to extend from the main body (see above). I love you beetle coat.

Vogue 1335
This is going to be perfect the next time I need to sew myself a straight jacket or a great jumping off point for a Rebel Alliance ice world Hoth uniform. What-the-what-the-who-the-how-the-why-oh-why?

Thank you Leia.
